Celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated across the world on March 17th; St. Patrick’s is one of the most popular occasions which is celebrated with a lot of excitement and devotion. Patrick was born in Roman Britain but at the age of sixteen he was captured and taken to Ireland by the Irish raiders. However the significance of this day originates in Ireland, as a Catholic feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The day became the feast day in the universal church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding, as a member of the commission for the reform of the breviary in the early part of 17th century.

Celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day-
The first St. Patrick’s day Parade was celebrated in New York in 1766, when Irish soldiers marched through the city and the no. of people increased to around 150,000 who marched through the city. Common themes included on this occasion are wearing green or orange, eating Irish foods and Irish drinks as well as playing Irish music and enjoying Irish themed games. In America, there are parades, Irish dances and jigs, Irish singing, wearing Leprechaun-themed outfits, clovers with three leaves, and more. The holiday is celebrated with a day of prayer by many Irish Catholic families. St. Patrick's Day is often called by a nickname, St. Paddy's Day.

One of the most popular traditions that goes with St. Patrick’s Day is the drinking of particularly green ale. Green is the color of the day.

St. Patrick’s Day was once celebrated in Ireland as a religious day but is now used to gather many people from around the world with each parade, fireworks and entertainment.
